Pogo’s Tale is a story of love: the affection of a family and their special dogs and the canines' devotion to the people they meet. It all begins when the author’s daughter, Cody, wants a “mop dog” for her seventh birthday. Her mother, Linda, decides on a long-haired Shi-tzu she names Bonzai. When Cody goes to college ten years later, the senior Lutes become the dog’s caretakers. As an RN working long shifts at a VA nursing home, Linda needs a plan for the sociable Bonzai—and decides to turn him into a therapy dog. It’s a win-win situation: Hard-working nurses and lonely, suffering, and often anxious patients alike appreciate his visits. When the cherished little “mop dog” passes away at the advanced age of fourteen, his saddened “parents” decide against ever having another dog.Yet, two years later, Linda begins to reconsider their decision. Secret excursions to the pound and the Humane Society lead to her discovering Pogo, an energetic brown puppy. Unable to forget about her, Linda suggests to her husband that they visit the shelter and look around. John agrees, and his wife feigns indifference as he checks out the dogs—and stops at the exuberant puppy’s cage. The rest, as they say, is history. As Pogo immediately adjusts to her new home, Linda decides her name is appropriate: the lively dog’s enthusiastic bouncing reminds her of a child happily jumping on a pogo stick. As Pogo grows, and settles down well enough at obedience school to graduate, Linda (now retired) begins thinking about the future. Both the bored former nurse and her canine companion (whose activities consist of hiking with John and enjoying commercials featuring animals) need more. The solution, is, again, teaching Pogo to be a therapy dog. After the energetic pooch receives certification, she demonstrates her enthusiasm for her “profession” by getting excited whenever Linda brings her required leash and harness. As the duo ply their trade in nursing homes, Linda realizes that while she may have taught Pogo how to do her job, the dog is schooling her human in important skills like enthusiasm, reacting positively to what life has in store, and proper relationships with others. And it is not only Linda who benefits: reluctant and animal-loving seniors alike find Pogo’s visits a high point of the week.Linda Lutes’ story is as magical and mesmerizing as any novel. Not only does the author allow us to see animals and humans in a new way, she shows us a dog’s-eye view of our world. Lovely poems composed in tribute to people and canines who have touched the Lutes’ lives enrich the narrative. You don’t have to be a dog lover to enjoy the story of Pogo and the people in her life. Even youngsters too young to read the book for themselves are sure to enjoy listening to the amazing dog’s adventures. I truly enjoyed this true story of Pogo the therapy dog. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't wait to hear about the next situation or history lesson. The most important thing is Pogo does not die at the end. She continues on with her special work and intuitive ways. She is a little hero. Thank you, Linda Lutes, for writing your memories and for the work you do with your special friend!
